“Layered Musicality: X-Ray Vision”
Wouldn’t it be cool if we had musical “x-ray vision?” The power to see/hear the inner workings of the music, to separate distinct layers or roles and look at the danceable potentials of each?
We often hear that tango is a complex or layered music. In this lecture we’ll see and hear concretely what that means and how one can enrich the musical conversation in the dance pair through awareness of these layers. Korey has re-recorded some favorite golden era tangos of Di Sarli and Fresedo allowing us to see and hear inside the structure of the music and isolate individual instruments and musical roles. With the help of these resources we’ll analyze dance performances from a wide range of model interpreters to see how one can utilize detail in the music to create a beautiful shared dance experience!

Bio:
Korey Ireland is a professional composer turned tango-addict. He brings a lifetime of musical experience and an unquenchable thirst for tango to his teaching. Currently based in Berlin, Germany, Korey has spent the better part of the last 19 years traveling and teaching tango in the U.S., England, Holland, Spain, Germany, Russia and Argentina, sharing his passion for tango, music, expression, and connection. In recent years, this mission has grown to include work with aspiring tango musicians at festival throughout North America and Europe to create live music for dancers. In November 2009 he led the “Monster Orchestra” of Tango de los Muertos resulting in a live CD of his arrangements and transcriptions released later that year. This project led to the birth of the Community Tango Orchestra project, which in its 9th year now includes about a dozen ensembles throughout the US and Europe dedicated to nurturing the tradition of golden age tango for dancers and musicians.
